Read it yourself.

Now I’d like to take a moment to remind you about how awesome the rest of the announced changes are!

Players will have the ability to rate up or rate down posts so that great topics and replies stand out from the not-so-great; low-rated posts will appear dimmer to show that the community feels that they don’t contribute effectively to the conversation, and Blizzard’s community team will be able to quickly and easily locate highly rated posts to participate in or to highlight discussions that players find worthwhile.

This, alone, is going to make a huge difference. It’s been a long time coming, and will address a large portion of trolling.

Individual topics will be threaded by context, meaning replies to specific posts will be grouped together, making it easier for players to keep track of multiple conversations within a thread. We’re also adding a way for Blizzard posters to “broadcast” important messages forums-wide , to help communicate breaking news to the community in a clear and timely fashion. Beyond that, we’re improving our forum search function to make locating interesting topics easier and help lower the number of redundant threads, and we have more planned as well.

This will make everything more readable.

Honestly, with the exception of their reversed decision to force gamers to use their real names, this was an amazing announcement! Now that they’ve given us what we asked for, we can start focusing on the good parts of the announcement. And resubscribing, right Gnomeaggedon? :P

So aside from community voting and threading, what other ideas do you guys have that would make the forums a better place? Off the top of my head, I suspect forcing people to choose a single character that will show on all their posts would be a good first step. No more anonymous level 1 alts from another server bashing recruitment threads. Additionally, I’d like to see a PM system, maybe integrated with in-game mail.

Hi guys! The non-disclosure has been lifted, and what we know about hunters in Cataclysm’s beta is postable. I’m not in the beta or alpha because I didn’t sign up for it, however my co-host and dwarven chauvinist, Frostheim, has been chewing his tongue trying not to tell us all on the podcast about the cool stuff he was seeing in Alpha.

Well, I’m glad that’s over! He just posted everything we know about hunters so far on his site. Here’s some of my favorite parts: (more…)

editor’s note: Please put your hands together for the newest OutDPS writer, Shadowstreak! You might know of him as the artist for the Frostheim Goggles comic, over at WHU. If not, go check it out- it’s some funny stuff!

Shadowstreak will be writing about addons, since Faeghleis is taking a break from the game until Cataclysm.

Hello there OutDPS readers! Today we’ll be talking about OmniCC!

I decided to start with this because it’s a small, yet really useful mod. I’ll get to the staples of the mod world in further posts. Unlike what the name suggests, OmniCC has absolutely nothing to do with crowd controlling. I’m sure some of you out there might actually find that this mod alone will be able to increase your DPS! Not just for hunters, but any class that has an action bar. (more…)

From Ahunkaluvin:

“I’d like a guide to what the common mistakes are. For instance, I have pretty fair gear and have tried to put most of your lessons to practice, but somehow I still get nowhere near the DPS(about 1600-1800) of my fellow hunters. OK, So I suck, but, WHY? (other than just general suckiness)”

I’m not the kind of guy to tell someone how bad they are- if they ask for help, that puts them ahead of 90% of the hunters who are (currently) surpassing them in DPS. (more…)

Buff’d is like Digg or Reddit, but for WOW. It’s awesome! Still in beta (they say they officially launch July 1st) but it’s working mostly for now. I get errors when I try commenting, but I can vote just fine!

Things I like:

  • They offer separate RSS feeds for overall info and by category
  • Someone already submitted one of my guides there! I know, who’d have though people actually read my drivel?
  • Unlike other link lists, the content here is purely driven by popularity

[ed: Art from Buff'd dropped by in the comments and clarified a few things, see below for details about how they plan on dealing with trolls]

Things I don’t like:

  • Digg
  • Wow.com comment trolls

You see where the problem lies? If these guys can keep the troll background radiation to an acceptably low level, this will completely change the way I read. If they can’t (trolls are surprisingly well organized and hard to filter), it will degrade to the point that Digg has and become unusable.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
