A hotfix has been released that should allow all SV hunters attacking a target to benefit from Noxious Stings.  The issue had been that only the most recently manually applied Serpent Sting on the target would offer the 10% extra damage dealt from Noxious Stings.  Any older Serpent Stings on the target would not confer the damage bonus to the hunter(s) who had applied them.  This was obviously a problem whenever you had more than one SV hunter in the raid because only one of them could have the damage bonus at a given time.

Multiple hunters attacking the same target should now see the proper benefit from Noxious Stings.

Survival is the spec of choice these days thanks to the buffs it received in 4.3 and 4.3.2.  This means that the spec is receiving closer scrutiny than it has in the past.  The consensus build appears to involve SV taking three points in One With Nature, two points in Sic ‘Em! and none in Careful Aim.  However, often left out of talent discussions is how this build’s optimality is conditional upon pet talents.

Edit: Post updated to include Frenzy builds.  Thanks to Harvoc for the suggestion.

Survival is changing for the better in 4.3.  Its DPS is going up both in relative and absolute terms, leaving it more appealing than it has been since its nerf after Cataclysm launched.  What is there to know about SV gameplay that might be different for returning hunters?

edit: The post now includes updates resulting from conversations held in the comment section.

This post goes over the relative pros and cons of the different hunter talent trees for PVP.  It leaves aside the strengths and weaknesses that hunters have in general, focusing instead on how the specs compare to each other.

MM will want to keep its points in Careful Aim despite the nerf, but what about BM and SV, specs for which CA is weaker?  At least according to tentative results from a warf that’s been femaled, BM should keep points in CA (like this) if the PTR change goes live.  SV will be better off putting three points in OWN, two in SE and zero in CA (like this).  This is categorically true in my estimation for SV hunters with cunning pets.  SV hunters with ferocity pets will want to have their pets have at least one point in Wild Hunt (rather than going 2/2 Shark Attack).  The best SV results I found were with the SV spec I recommend and a ferocity pet with one point in Wild Hunt and one in Shark attack (like this).

Note that these results were found using my gear and the femaledwarf setting that allows you to manipulate the percentage of the fight spent in CA range.  I reduced it from 20% to 10%.  I additionally disabled AS during CA.  Note also that these results assume a tank and spank fight and that I committed no errors.  Thanks as always to Zeherah.

The recent buff to Aspect of the Hawk left Survival with an interesting choice: 3/3 talent points in One with Nature (OWN) or just 1/3?  The question isn’t whether One with Nature is good.  OWN is good.  The question is whether or not it is better than the other good dump talents that Survival can spec into, Sic ‘Em! (SE) and Careful Aim (CA).  SV can’t have all three maxed out and so it’s a matter of opportunity cost: where should the four points we can spend go amongst the six possible options?

On episode 70 of the Hunting Party Podcast, we talk about the changes to the class that the 4.0.6 patch brought. Specifically the new shift to marksmanship. Also, Frostheim wants to remind you that the government’s funding for iTunes reviews of hunter podcasts is at an all time low.

This week, we talk more about the impending nerfs to the hunter class in the next patch. Again these things change fast, so it’s already outdated, but this is what we had to say about it last weekend.

I’m a fairly laid back hunter blogger, and as such, I tend to see things through a rose-colored monocle. It was not needed today- the Cataclysm hunter changes were 100% good ones, in my opinion.

I’ll complain if I feel the results need tweaking, but as all we’re seeing now is a design philosophy, I have to say that it looks like they’ve nailed down a bunch of gripes we’ve had for a long time. Assuming they can balance it so we’re ahead of feral druids when we all hit 85, I’ll be a happy camper! (more…)

There I was, sitting on the train, planning out today’s post. Well, I was actually zoning out listening to Muse. But while doing that, I had the most awesome idea for a post! Unfortunately, having no notepad available, I decided to forgo touch-typing it into my iPod. FAIL! I totally forgot what I was going to write about by the time I woke up this morning.

I’m going to take this opportunity to keep you fine folks up to date on what’s been happening behind the scenes:

  • There are multiple episodes of the Hunting Party podcast recorded, however Faeghleis is bereft of internet, so I’ll be chopping them together as soon as I get 3 hours to spare. Not tonight, hopefully tomorrow.
  • The next show will be broadcast live again: I got a nice hand-me-down computer with a decent sound card in it that I am planning on using to push the show through uStream.
  • The hunter DPS addon is actually surprisingly close to where I said it was to get you to click on my rick roll for April Fools. I’m testing it tonight!
    • I really really like April fools.
  • I’ve gone full time marks spec- even without a bleed debuff, it’s more DPS now that I got a few marks friendly upgrades. I keep my SV spec around for nostalgia, Saurfang, and Putricide.
  • I played a BG as MM the other day with full PvE gear on, and had a surprising amount of fun. It’s very glass cannon, but all the cooldowns make it more of a glass cannon coated in industrial lubricant. Pro tip: when you’re running into a group of enemies with a group of friends, leave the healer to someone else, and focus on their rogue. Ooooh, I hate rogues.

Hear that? That’s the signal to noise ratio hitting the negatives. Later!

Improved Hunter’s Mark is an easily reachable talent in the marksmanship tree that everyone’s min/max calculations assume you have. The default “best buffs” button on the DPS calculator has it set to 3/3 talents and glyphed too.

Who should take IHM? How should this be decided? Ideally, the person who is giving up the least for it. Let’s take a look at all the popular builds and see where they can afford to spend points on it: (more…)

There’s no doubt about it, right now, the best hunter DPS in the game is done by marks hunters. Marksmanship is the end game raiding spec, if you have the gear.

There are presently two styles of marks hunters: agility and armor penetration.

My old buddy (and OutDPS poet laureate), Frostheim, posted today about some things Ghostcrawler said about BM raiding. In his analysis, he dropped a hint that he had been planning a “can survival raid” post, so I figured I’d clear the air a bit about the whole survival and marksmanship comparison.

I’ll say it right here on top of the post. Survival is unequivocally more DPS than marksmanship is for a lot of hunters in ICC 25.

Unless you only take upgrades that are marks friendly, survival will be more DPS than marksmanship for a large number of players until well into ICC 25. In my gear, for example, my marksmanship spec only recently started doing more DPS than my survival spec.

Here’s the thing: SV doesn’t suffer as much from the loss of debuffs. Especially the bleed debuff. Here’s my MM missing trauma profile- 10939 DPS. You can open up this profile and play around with the buffs/debuffs tab yourself, but here’s a list of how much DPS both specs lose for various missing debuffs. (more…)

So I got a new weapon recently, and I’m sure by now most of you have managed to pick up something from ToC that’s giving you good mileage, which means it’s time to look at marksmanship! Of course, a lot of you PvE as marks. MM is by far the most fun spec to play in PvP, but until you have a good weapon (ilvl 232 or better) it can be hard to unlock it’s true potential. (more…)
