This post is more of a belated confirmation than news.  At least some pets who apply debuffs often do not apply them correctly to Ultraxion.  I noticed this many weeks ago with my dragonhawk.  Back then I attempted a fix by manually repositioning my pet closer to the boss.  This did not solve the problem; my pet’s debuff uptime was still very low.  It was only this past week that the stars (or, rather, raid auras) aligned again to allow me to try out another fix.  This time I macro’d Dragon’s Breath to a shot, and it did the trick.

Rabid Bug

Zeherah notes on the forums that there is presently a bug with our pets’ autocasting of Rabid.  It can apparently wait a substantial amount of time to cast after it is off cooldown.  Zeherah also suggests that Rabid’s behavior varies between bosses; on some bosses it gets used properly, on some bosses it doesn’t.  Moreover, the Rabid bug may not actually appear in target dummy testing.  Weird.

I just wanted to quickly confirm that pet Focus is back to normal on the PTR.  For more on the issue, check out the forum thread here.

And, as long as I’m confirming things, yes, the new model for the Dark Phoenix mount does look much better.

Hey guys, look! Frostheim let me write a hunter article at wow.com! So I took the opportunity to make a case for taming druids.

Lastly, I think we should be able to tame druids. Wait, don’t close this browser yet! Hear me out! I think that during PvP, hunters should have a short term Mind Control they could cast that would allow them to temporarily replace their pet with a druid opponent. We can already fear them, so this doesn’t go much farther than that. I’d totally support “Tame Druid” sharing a cooldown with Scare Beast. Now in addition to the druids’ cacophony, I hear priests screaming at me. You want to keep your signature ability? Fine, make a tamed druid only as controllable as a pet and immune to falling damage. There’s no easy way to throw your pet off a cliff in a battleground, short of Eyes of the Beast, and that could be made to not work.

What is extreme soloing? It is soloing game content that was originally not meant to be done by one player, such as older instances and older raids.   Typically, this content is challenging, otherwise it isn’t extreme.  I realize that “extreme soloing” isn’t the coolest name for the activity, but it is the name already in use and I see no reason to clutter things up with new terms so long as they work.

Why would you want to solo extremely? Players sometimes want achievements or reputation or mounts or legendary weapons that are obtained from running difficult older content.  However, they may also wish to solo something because it’s simply there, because it’s a challenge. (more…)

I’m a fairly laid back hunter blogger, and as such, I tend to see things through a rose-colored monocle. It was not needed today- the Cataclysm hunter changes were 100% good ones, in my opinion.

I’ll complain if I feel the results need tweaking, but as all we’re seeing now is a design philosophy, I have to say that it looks like they’ve nailed down a bunch of gripes we’ve had for a long time. Assuming they can balance it so we’re ahead of feral druids when we all hit 85, I’ll be a happy camper! (more…)

Nethaera posted the hunter changes. Reposting now, analysis and follow up quotes will be edited in at the end.

Of course this would happen while I was at lunch. I called it.

With the upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm many game elements will be changing, and each class will be receiving a number of tweaks. Here, we will explore the changes that are being made to the gun-wielding, pet-training hunter. The information you’re about to read is certainly not complete, and is only meant to act as a preview of some of the exciting new things to come. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the new hunter abilities! (more…)

From Zarhym:

“Hellscream’s Warsong and Strength of Wrynn now provide their bonuses to player pet health and damage, as well as the absorption amounts of Power Word: Shield and Sacred Shield.”

I’m happy :)

edit: well, I will be in 3.3.3!

Or are you just happy to see me? Looks like our pets are not auto-casting as fast as they should be. If you leave an ability on auto-cast, pets apparently take a variable amount of time more than they should to cast it. There are reports of this going down to almost nothing in deserted areas, but clearly a raid zone is not deserted. Edit: Tchann from Crowd Control has tested and confirmed this data. Thanks Tchann!

Here’s the good news- this is not new, but has only recently been discovered. If you fix it yourself, you can potentially increase your DPS.

The fix

Chances are you already have kill command macroed into all your shots, and possibly silencing shot if you’re marks. Take a look at the pet abilities you leave on auto-cast, and simply add them to your shot macros.

/cast Furious Howl
/use [@pettarget,harm,exists] Bite

edit: changed the bite command to work if you have to leave your pet on another target.

The above is what I will be adding. Pay close attention, however, to the abilities you do not put on auto-cast. There are many people who choose to leave furious howl off autocast so they can time it with their trinkets.

A final note- I’ll have to test this to be sure, but I suspect that we’ll get a higher ability use per minute if we continue to leave these on auto-cast, and just use the macro to shorten the wait whenever we can.

There has been a surge in questions about the basics lately- people telling me that they are not producing enough DPS based on what they think they should do with the gear they have. I’m going to go over the basics today, and if you do everything you read here, you shouldn’t have that problem. (more…)

This patch contained a lot of awesome. One of the smaller awesomes, however, was that our pets gained some new functionality from cower and lost the old functionality. Today we’re going to go over the changes, as well as some potential use cases. (more…)

From Ahunkaluvin:

“I’d like a guide to what the common mistakes are. For instance, I have pretty fair gear and have tried to put most of your lessons to practice, but somehow I still get nowhere near the DPS(about 1600-1800) of my fellow hunters. OK, So I suck, but, WHY? (other than just general suckiness)”

I’m not the kind of guy to tell someone how bad they are- if they ask for help, that puts them ahead of 90% of the hunters who are (currently) surpassing them in DPS. (more…)
