Well, I’m starting to write up some revisions for my earlier work on huntering pre-3.1. This will not be ready today, however, because while the patch notes are finalized, no live testing has been done. For now, here are two really nifty tools I discovered in my travels that every raid leader should know about.

First up, we have a raid comp calculator. What this does is allow you to populate your raid group with the spec/classes you are bringing and see out of the list of raid buffs and boss debuffs what you have access to. If you’re deciding whether to bring that arms warrior for his bleed magnification, use this tool first to double check that you don’t already have it :)

Next up, a neat little flash animation of the floor in Heigan’s room during the Heigan dance. I imagine that there will still be guilds running Naxx for new players, as well as if they’re having trouble clearing Ulduar. This will demonstrate in a very simple way where you can safely stand during the dance.

Sometimes you can’t trapdance. For example- I’m not comfortable running in and out of trapping range on dragons with cleave and/or tail swipe. It’s also almost not worth the run time with their large hit boxes and the fact that you pretty much have to get toward the middle to get a trap off. In addition, reading over my old posts, I realized that I was doing my math wrong for the number of lock and loads you can get per minute: assuming 24 second traps and the odd random sting proc, we’re looking at between 2-3 per minute on average. It’s still worth it on bosses with adds (like grand widow or noth), but barely worth it on bosses like maexxna and not recommended at all on kel’thuzad and the like. (more…)

Today I’m going to do the next installment in my trapdancing series. We’ll discuss Loatheb, Instructor Razuvious, and Gothik the Harvester.

Some background- trapdancing increases your dps by allowing you to get between 4 and 6 lock and load procs per minute. You drop frost traps on anything you can, even the boss if you have to. (more…)

I got a PM on the elitist jerks boards asking for help. A hunter had been asked by his GM to figure out what he was doing wrong. He has graciously allowed me to post my advice on this blog, so here goes. (more…)

To continue my series of posts about how to trap dance, today we’ll talk about Thaddius, Noth, and Heigan.

I didn’t write this last time, and then wowinsider went and linked to part 3 explaining how to trapdance, but not why. The explanation is on one of my earlier posts, but simply put, the reason we’re doing this is to get as many lock and load procs per minute as we can. Procs forced by frost traps do not check for cooldowns, and do not reset the cooldown. So even if the tooltip for lock and load claims a 30 second cooldown, you can get 4-6 procs per minute if you trap dance. (more…)

Editor’s note: If you are lucky enough to win the key to the focusing iris from Sapphiron even after you repeatedly murder that ugly cat in cold blood (and everyone knows that killing that cat guarantees a /roll of below 10 for the key), don’t forget to start the quest before you have your guild first Malygos kill. Even going back to Dragonblight to pass in said quest will not allow you to finish the follow up. You have to have it in your log at the time of the Malygos kill. The more you know.

Well, here comes another delay in my series about trap dancing. Nobody can procrastinate like a hunter.

Today I’m going to write about one fight in Naxxramas: Gluth. Why am I writing about one fight among the many end game encounters? Because this one will tell the people you run with whether you’re a button mashing, key turning huntard or a hunter extraordinaire. (more…)

Continuing my series of posts on how to trapdance on specific bosses, today we’re going to talk about Patchwerk, Grand Widow Faerlina, and Maexxna.

Patchwerk is a healing fight- dps can just go full throttle and not worry about moving. Unless the heals fail to keep the hateful strike tanks topped off, in which case, whoever’s highest on the agro list with full HP is going to take a hateful strike. As Bonkd pointed out in my last post, this has happened to me a few times.

The best way to get traps off on patchwerk (who has no adds) is to (more…)

I’m going to write a multi-part post on trap dancing: the art of finding a safe way to get something to proc a lock and load for you. I’m going to go over all the bosses I’ve got experience with. I’ll do as many as I can fit into a post, and then if after reading them, you have a suggestion as to who I should do next, just leave a comment.

Some background: as I’ve written before, using a frost trap to proc a lock and load will not cause an internal lock and load cooldown, nor will it check to see if it’s already on cooldown. Play your cards right, and on certain fights you can have 4-6 procs per fight. This is what that hunter who always beats you on the meters is doing. (more…)
