On episode 70 of the Hunting Party Podcast, we talk about the changes to the class that the 4.0.6 patch brought. Specifically the new shift to marksmanship. Also, Frostheim wants to remind you that the government’s funding for iTunes reviews of hunter podcasts is at an all time low.

I’ve been grinding a fair bit of MM PvP since 4.0.6. I’m not so good at arenas, but I’m fairly decent in BGs. One of the most important factors in BG success with a hunter is your ability to play the map, and utilize the advantages of your superior class to the best effect possible. The skill I’m going to talk about today is hunting down those miserable flag carriers. (more…)

There I was, sitting on the train, planning out today’s post. Well, I was actually zoning out listening to Muse. But while doing that, I had the most awesome idea for a post! Unfortunately, having no notepad available, I decided to forgo touch-typing it into my iPod. FAIL! I totally forgot what I was going to write about by the time I woke up this morning.

I’m going to take this opportunity to keep you fine folks up to date on what’s been happening behind the scenes:

  • There are multiple episodes of the Hunting Party podcast recorded, however Faeghleis is bereft of internet, so I’ll be chopping them together as soon as I get 3 hours to spare. Not tonight, hopefully tomorrow.
  • The next show will be broadcast live again: I got a nice hand-me-down computer with a decent sound card in it that I am planning on using to push the show through uStream.
  • The hunter DPS addon is actually surprisingly close to where I said it was to get you to click on my rick roll for April Fools. I’m testing it tonight!
    • I really really like April fools.
  • I’ve gone full time marks spec- even without a bleed debuff, it’s more DPS now that I got a few marks friendly upgrades. I keep my SV spec around for nostalgia, Saurfang, and Putricide.
  • I played a BG as MM the other day with full PvE gear on, and had a surprising amount of fun. It’s very glass cannon, but all the cooldowns make it more of a glass cannon coated in industrial lubricant. Pro tip: when you’re running into a group of enemies with a group of friends, leave the healer to someone else, and focus on their rogue. Ooooh, I hate rogues.

Hear that? That’s the signal to noise ratio hitting the negatives. Later!

There’s no doubt about it, right now, the best hunter DPS in the game is done by marks hunters. Marksmanship is the end game raiding spec, if you have the gear.

There are presently two styles of marks hunters: agility and armor penetration.

My old buddy (and OutDPS poet laureate), Frostheim, posted today about some things Ghostcrawler said about BM raiding. In his analysis, he dropped a hint that he had been planning a “can survival raid” post, so I figured I’d clear the air a bit about the whole survival and marksmanship comparison.

I’ll say it right here on top of the post. Survival is unequivocally more DPS than marksmanship is for a lot of hunters in ICC 25.

Unless you only take upgrades that are marks friendly, survival will be more DPS than marksmanship for a large number of players until well into ICC 25. In my gear, for example, my marksmanship spec only recently started doing more DPS than my survival spec.

Here’s the thing: SV doesn’t suffer as much from the loss of debuffs. Especially the bleed debuff. Here’s my MM missing trauma profile- 10939 DPS. You can open up this profile and play around with the buffs/debuffs tab yourself, but here’s a list of how much DPS both specs lose for various missing debuffs. (more…)

Beast mastery is a fan favorite. It was also unbalanced for the first part of this expansion, and got nerfed hard in patch 3.0.8. After that patch, the majority of people who played BM in a raiding environment were people who really liked the playstyle, and had more skill with it than they did using another spec. All the “fair weather” beast masters moved on to survival, and then marks, and now, it seems, back to survival. All this while, however, beast mastery has been getting small buffs to bring it back into the fold of “raid viability” (which I define as being at a point where you are not asked to respec if your guild is hitting the enrage timer on a boss). This is my first hard mode guide. Last night, I was invited to raid Ulduar 10 with the clique after we had to cancel the 25 due to an unfortunate coincidence of real life stun-locked healers. We can raid if we have to sub in DPS or tanks, but offspec healers won’t cut it. The instance ID had only General, Yogg, and Algalon left. We elected to do General and Algalon, however we didn’t finish Algalon off before he decided to end the universe. His guide will have to come some other day :) (more…)

It’s not showing up yet in the calculators, but survival might just have eclipsed marksmanship this patch. Marks hasn’t changed, but survival seems to have. Lock and load is proccing way more than it used to. According to some data from hunters on the survival thread at elitist jerks, each tick of black arrow has a 20% chance to proc lock and load when it’s not on the new internal 22 second cooldown. Also, frost traps do not cause the 22 second cooldown, however are certainly affected by it. (more…)

Today I’m going to talk cookie cutter glyphs and specs for marksmanship hunters. That’s right, specs plural. There are a myriad of viable builds for marks, and I was rather overwhelmed when I made the switch. (more…)

So as I’m digesting the changes from survival to marksmanship, one of the things I took for granted was that I’d have to re-gem and re-enchant. Agility used to be king, but surely attack power would be for marks right? Apparently not! (more…)
