I realized I’ve never written up a guide about set pieces for marks hunters. This is a common question: “Should I stick with 2T9, or get my 4T10 bonus?”. This also has a very simple response: “Do whatever the DPS calculators say is more DPS, because they’re usually right”.

The long version (more…)

Improved Hunter’s Mark is an easily reachable talent in the marksmanship tree that everyone’s min/max calculations assume you have. The default “best buffs” button on the DPS calculator has it set to 3/3 talents and glyphed too.

Who should take IHM? How should this be decided? Ideally, the person who is giving up the least for it. Let’s take a look at all the popular builds and see where they can afford to spend points on it: (more…)

There’s no doubt about it, right now, the best hunter DPS in the game is done by marks hunters. Marksmanship is the end game raiding spec, if you have the gear.

There are presently two styles of marks hunters: agility and armor penetration.

Armor penetration or agility? I’m going to give you the rules of thumb.

  • Never go ArP if you’re not MM.
  • If your gear has less than about 350 ArP from gear (not including gems or a trinket proc), then you should use arcane shot taking improved arcane shot talent, as well as gem agility.
  • If your gear has more than 350ish ArP (this amount changes based on how much crit and AP you have), but less than 850 (again, not including gems or a trinket proc), then you should continue to gem agility, but drop arcane shot from your rotation, and use the improved arcane shot points somewhere else. To see whether this is a DPS increase, you need to use a DPS calculator for your spec and gear.
  • If your gear has over 850 ArP (again, not including gems or a trinket proc) and you don’t mind being a bit of a “one trick pony” (a term Tobin at EJ coined to mean that you don’t AOE or DPS while moving well), then you can gem ArP and will get a DPS increase.

These are not going to be accurate for everyone, but they will be most of the time.  I’m going to reserve the bottom of this post for exceptions to the rules.

We all know that patch 3.2.2 is going to see a reduction in effectiveness of armor penetration, but how much will this affect you? Well, the best answer is to load your character into a calculator (like www.femaledwarf.com), save your DPS, then check “Enable 3.2.2 Changes” under settings, recalculate, and see how much it went down. This week, we cover the news: faction changes, the armor penetration nerf, 3.2.2, bestial wrath nerfbuff, trial of the grand crusader difficulty, the tier 9 set bonus bug fixes, and Darkbrew’s theories on management. We then answered some listener questions!

Episode 6 of the Hunting Party Podcast was also the first live show, however this caused no end of trouble for our producer because the audio synch was much worse on Talkshoe.com than it is on Skype. Until we can find something with as much quality as Skype that allows us to broadcast our voices and provides a chat room, we’re going back to canned podcasts.

As always, here is the Hunting Party Podcast feed, or here is the direct XML feed. If you email us comments or questions for Munken from Ensidia, we’ll ask him on the (hopefully next) show. Send an email to outdps@gmail.com, and mention “podcast” in the subject.

If you don’t do syndicated podcasts (iTunes, or whatever) but just want to download this week’s MP3 and play it on your player of choice, click here.

Today I’ll be going over how to gem and enchant your hunter, regardless of spec. First off, you need to know what goal will give you the most bang for your buck. To that end, import your character into www.femaledwarf.com and we’ll get started. Here‘s a guide for how to use it if you’re not sure. Make sure you’re using a buff profile similar to what you can expect in your typical group, however if you raid 25 man, it’s safe to just click “Enable best raid buffs/debuffs”. (more…)

According to the class Q&A on wow.com:

  • They’re replacing mana with energy, like rogues. We’ll have a maximum of 100 focus, and it will regenerate 6/sec (a little slower than rogues’ 10 energy/sec), or a little faster (12/sec) if we use steady shot. No more mana regen, aspect of the viper, or int needed.
  • There will be a complete wipe and overhaul of our talent trees. Again.
  • They’re probably doing away with most talents that increase chance to hit.
  • They’re doing away with armor penetration, and replacing it with “mastery”.
  • Haste will now speed up focus regen
  • Attack power is gone, replaced with agility.
  • There’s a legendary 2h axe called “Shadowmourne”, that whether it’s appropriate or not, we’ll be rolling on :)
  • In general, they’re getting rid of training every new rank of abilities- spells will scale with level, no need to drop by the trainer.
  • Ammo will no longer be consumable, but be an item.

There will, I’m sure, be much chewing on this, but I’m gonna save it for this week’s podcast. Cheers!

[edit 12 aug: fixed broken link, sorry for fat-fingering the first link to the site in question]

You’ve probably all been told at one point or another to “use the spreadsheet”. They mean this spreadsheet, and here‘s the guide I wrote for it. Since then, the cries for a version that would work for people who don’t have access to Microsoft Office could be heard for miles. Luckily for us, the always effervescent Zeherah has created an amazing online tool that does just this. (more…)

My paladin healers are busy guys. Between keeping my pet alive with splash heals from their holy light and actual heals that will bounce back to the tank through beacon of light, they’ve got a lot on their hands. That and I believe feign death is for pansies. Hunters were given a bubble for a reason!

All of this means that I’m lucky if they have time to judge the boss more than the strict minimum needed for their haste bonus, and that means judgment of wisdom‘s uptime can be fairly low. (more…)

Today I’m going to talk cookie cutter glyphs and specs for marksmanship hunters. That’s right, specs plural. There are a myriad of viable builds for marks, and I was rather overwhelmed when I made the switch. (more…)

[edit 25 Sept 2009: this was written before the last patch, and I have a new version that covers it after the update]

I’m sure you’ve read that all the cool hunters are gemming for armor pen, and seeing good results from it. The best possible DPS thread over at elitist jerks shows a very high setup using mostly armor penetration, however this information should be taken with a grain of salt. In fact, agility will almost always get you more DPS, and today we’re going to figure out why. (more…)

Gear for success, and, well, no promises. Just do it.

Gearing a survival hunter is much simpler than gearing for beast mastery was before patch 3.0.8. Back then, we were all haste capped without any haste rating, and our life was a struggle to find stuff that didn’t spend all its’ itemization points on haste. Survival these days is much easier. All the stats you would expect us to gain from benefit us. I’m going to go down the list and talk about caps and diminishing returns when I have to. (more…)
