Several new updates to the 4.3 patch notes affect hunters, including the removal of some prominent pet bugs and the implementation of some mechanical changes that, to put it bluntly, do not even work.

A Quick State of Hunter DPS
Posted in Beast Mastery, Hunter, Marksmanship, Survival, World of Warcraft, tagged dps, DPS Bot, logs, parses on September 25, 2011 | 26 Comments »
I haven’t seen any “state of hunter dps” posts in a while so I thought I’d throw one together.
Soloing Altairus

Hunters are capable of soloing Altairus in the Vortex Pinnacle on normal mode, and this is nice since he has a chance to drop a mount. Other guides already exist for soloing this guy (Gavendo’s - text plus vid, Retal01′s - vid of a whole run, Atrakinze’s - Jan. 1 vid of kill only, etc.), but I figured it wouldn’t hurt to have one that’s up to date for 4.2 and that includes some useful insights that I didn’t see elsewhere.
Comparing the Hunter Talent Trees for PVP

This post goes over the relative pros and cons of the different hunter talent trees for PVP. It leaves aside the strengths and weaknesses that hunters have in general, focusing instead on how the specs compare to each other.
Ability Spotlight: Hardcast Aimed Shot

This post concerns the version of Aimed Shot that we can fire instead of Arcane Shot as a focus dump in the MM rotation. When and why we should use this non-proc’d, hardcast version of AiS is a matter of some debate and this post attempts to offer some resolution.

First, let me say thank you, Zeherah, for your continued efforts toward modeling hunter dps. Second, I think it’s worth sharing that Zeherah updated her site with new options for modeling different MM rotations. Continue reading after the break for a brief look at these changes.
Quick note on aimed shot macros
Posted in Hunter, Marksmanship, World of Warcraft, tagged /cast, aimed shot, bug, fire, keybind, macro on February 23, 2011 | 6 Comments »
Just discovered that a particular annoying bug reported in beta is still affecting aimed shot. If you get a “Fire!” proc from casting a bunch of steady shots, and you type or macro “/cast aimed shot”, it will always use the hard cast. That is to say, it will stop your autoshots, perform the aimed shot cast, and then reset your autoshot timer. This means that while you can macro getting out of aspect of the fox for any other instant shot, you shouldn’t use this on aimed. That or you’ll have to create a new keybind for instant aimed shots.
Hunting down flag carriers!

I’ve been grinding a fair bit of MM PvP since 4.0.6. I’m not so good at arenas, but I’m fairly decent in BGs. One of the most important factors in BG success with a hunter is your ability to play the map, and utilize the advantages of your superior class to the best effect possible. The skill I’m going to talk about today is hunting down those miserable flag carriers. (more…)
Bloodthirsty PVP Gear Possibly Better than Dungeon Gear for PVE DPS
Posted in Beast Mastery, Hunter, Marksmanship, pvp, Survival, World of Warcraft, tagged gear, hunter gear, pvp, pvp gear on January 2, 2011 | 22 Comments »
I was playing around with Zeherah’s online dps modeler and found that four pieces of ilvl 352 Bloodthirsty pvp gear were better for my dps than the pieces of ilvl 346 pve gear I had equipped. This was true for all three specs (an SV dungeon build, an MM dungeon build and a standard BM build) that I ran through the modeler. The difference ranged from a few hundred dps (MM) to several hundred dps (SV) for me. Your mileage may vary, though, so I offer this post only as an encouragement to check out the merits of the pvp set gear for yourself at Zeherah’s site.
Likely Nerf to Survival, Buffs to Beast Mastery and Marksmanship
Posted in Beast Mastery, Hunter, Marksmanship, Survival, World of Warcraft, tagged buff, class changes, ghostcrawler, nerf on December 28, 2010 | 10 Comments »
In Ghostcrawler’s new post on upcoming class changes, all three hunter specs get mentioned by name in the first body paragraph. Survival hunters are brought up twice, for having suspiciously high single target damage and for having possibly too-high AoE damage. Beast Mastery and Marksmanship hunters get singled out as having damage that is definitely too low. This much attention, this prominently in the post suggests that some significant changes to all three hunter specs are on the horizon. We know for sure, at least, that improvements to Aimed Shot, Chimera Shot, Kill Shot and Kill Command are in the works to buff BM and MM (as noted in the ”Potpourri” section of the post).

Hi folks, Pherra here. I just uploaded a new release of the DPSCheck addon to WoWInterface and Curse. This new version has the first pass at priority checks for Beast Mastery and Marksmanship builds, along with a new buff/debuff checking feature. The priority checks are designed to help your shot selection in any fight, while the buff/debuff checks are for maximizing your DPS over longer fights.

Hi guys! The non-disclosure has been lifted, and what we know about hunters in Cataclysm’s beta is postable. I’m not in the beta or alpha because I didn’t sign up for it, however my co-host and dwarven chauvinist, Frostheim, has been chewing his tongue trying not to tell us all on the podcast about the cool stuff he was seeing in Alpha.
Well, I’m glad that’s over! He just posted everything we know about hunters so far on his site. Here’s some of my favorite parts: (more…)
Hunter Leveling at the End of Wrath

We’re in the doldrums at the end of Wrath. The story is done aside from a token shrine. Like captivated readers often do at the end of a good story, many players have opted to just flip back to the beginning of the game and create an alt. This abundance of young hunters in the hands of end-game players might alone be enough to merit a fresh post on the hunter leveling experience. However, motivation for the post you are reading also follows from the sea changes to leveling that we have seen in Wrath. Heirlooms, the dungeon finder (and its loot) and more-accessible pvp, among other things, have dramatically altered the way hunters level. In light of all these things, this post offers suggestions for the growing hunter.
How to Choose Your Set Pieces!

I realized I’ve never written up a guide about set pieces for marks hunters. This is a common question: “Should I stick with 2T9, or get my 4T10 bonus?”. This also has a very simple response: “Do whatever the DPS calculators say is more DPS, because they’re usually right”.

editor’s note: Please put your hands together again for the newest OutDPS writer, Shadowstreak! You might know of him as the artist for the Frostheim Goggles comic, over at WHU. If not, go check it out- it’s some funny stuff!
There are a few different DoT/Proc timing mods available. They all have their own different pros and cons and different selling points. Some of which might actually influence which one players end up settling with.
Hunters in their own aren’t all about the DoTs. We have Serpent Sting and that’s just about it. Unlike marks hunters with Chimera Shot, its much more vital for survival and BM hunters to track the duration of SS so they can refresh it on their own when it runs low. (more…)

Nethaera posted the hunter changes. Reposting now, analysis and follow up quotes will be edited in at the end.
Of course this would happen while I was at lunch. I called it.
With the upcoming World of Warcraft: Cataclysm many game elements will be changing, and each class will be receiving a number of tweaks. Here, we will explore the changes that are being made to the gun-wielding, pet-training hunter. The information you’re about to read is certainly not complete, and is only meant to act as a preview of some of the exciting new things to come. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the new hunter abilities! (more…)
When To Take Improved Hunter’s Mark!

Improved Hunter’s Mark is an easily reachable talent in the marksmanship tree that everyone’s min/max calculations assume you have. The default “best buffs” button on the DPS calculator has it set to 3/3 talents and glyphed too.
Who should take IHM? How should this be decided? Ideally, the person who is giving up the least for it. Let’s take a look at all the popular builds and see where they can afford to spend points on it: (more…)
