This round of Ability Spotlight focuses on Deterrence. As usual, we’ll be looking at pve applications here, leaving pvp applications for other writers.
The tooltip reads:
2 min cooldown
Requires Melee Weapon
When activated, increases the chance melee attacks will miss you by 100%, reduces the chance ranged attacks will hit you by 100% and grants a 100% chance to deflect spells. While Deterrence is active, you cannot attack. Lasts 5 sec.
Deterrence now provides 100% miss chance rather than 100% parry chance and remains in effect even if the hunter’s weapon is disarmed, but it’s still possible to temporarily delay a hunter’s use of Deterrence with the judicious use of disarm effects. Previously, certain attacks which could not be parried, such as Cheap Shot, would still land even when Deterrence was in effect; such attacks now shouldn’t hit. In combination with some of the recent adjustments to melee mobility, Deterrence should still be more effective overall. We’ll continue to keep an eye on it.
Deterrence is the hunter bubble. For the course of its duration it shields you from offensive abilities that can miss or be deflected. That is, it can protect you from another hunter’s auto shots or a shadow priest’s Mind Blast but it can’t protect you from lava damage. Which things are capable of missing or deflection is not always clear. For example, you can Deterrence through Valiona’s Devouring Flames (an aoe cone attack), but you can’t Deterrence through a Bound Deluge’s Frost Whirl (which to all appearances fires individual, targeted bolts).
Deterrence imposes a pacification effect on the hunter. This doesn’t prohibit all offensive moves; for example, you can still drop traps and use Kill Command. It also doesn’t bar a lot of non-offensive actions, such as Revive Pet. However, it does prohibit abilities that require weapons to use. This includes even non-damaging weapon-based abilities like Wing Clip and Tranquilizing Shot. This seems to be the dividing line for what Detererrence allows and what it doesn’t; if it requires a weapon (ranged or melee), you can’t use it during Deterrence.
Noteworthy actions that Deterrence allows:
- aspect switching
- Feign Death
- Kill Command
- Lightwell activations
- Master’s Call
- Mend Pet
- Scare Beast
- Trap Launcher
This long list suggests that Deterrencing through some boss ability does not mean you have to be idle for five seconds. If nothing else, you can throw snakes at the boss.
Deterrence in Current Raid Content
Deterrence is a powerful mitigation ability and is fantastic for (1) not dying, (2) saving your healers mana, and (3) looking cool. There’s a very nice EJ thread on hunter tips and tricks for current raids. From it, we can draw a short list of occasions where Deterrence can come in handy.
- Bastion of Twightlight
- Devouring Flames can be deflected. It doesn’t last the whole duration and so it is still better to just run out of the way.
- The single-target component of the Twighlight Meteorite can be deflected.
- Blackwing Descent
- Omnotron Defense System
- The flame blast that follows Magmatron’s Acquiring Target ability can be deflected by Detterence.
- Scorching Blast can allegedly be deflected.
- Phase 2′s Absolute Zero explosions can be deflected.
- Sonic Breath can be deflected.
- You can likely buy more time in phase 2 by Deterrencing before feigning.
- Omnotron Defense System
It’s worth noting that just because you can Deterrence through an ability it doesn’t necessarily mean you should. For example, it saves much more dps to Disengage out of the way of Valiona’s breath before she fires it than to sit in it with Deterrence on (and Deterrence doesn’t last the whole breath anyway, so you take damage, too).
You often don’t need Deterrence for it’s full duration. When that’s the case, having a quick means to cancel the aura is helpful. I use the following macro:
An initial activation triggers Deterrence and a second activation cancels it. If you are prone to mashing your Deterrence key, including a conditional in the cancelaura line, like
/cancelaura [mod] Deterrence, can make it harder to unintentionally cancel your Deterrence once it has started.
