In Ghostcrawler’s new post on upcoming class changes, all three hunter specs get mentioned by name in the first body paragraph. Survival hunters are brought up twice, for having suspiciously high single target damage and for having possibly too-high AoE damage. Beast Mastery and Marksmanship hunters get singled out as having damage that is definitely too low. This much attention, this prominently in the post suggests that some significant changes to all three hunter specs are on the horizon. We know for sure, at least, that improvements to Aimed Shot, Chimera Shot, Kill Shot and Kill Command are in the works to buff BM and MM (as noted in the ”Potpourri” section of the post).

Just my thoughts on the post GC made…
AOE damage, there will definitely be a nerf, though I suspect fairly small only based on there not being a ton of AOE based pulls. Even larger packs where firing off a couple of multi-shots is worthwhile at first, the reality is you must single target dps most mobs down. about the only true AOE fight (at least in the 5 mans) I see is the packs of zealots in Stonecore. Anything else, you best be going single target or the other pplayers in your party are not going to be too happy.
As for single target dps, he mentions SV Hunters and Unholy DKs being on top…not that they are too high. He specifically states others being too low. So I think the numbers we see as SV Hunters is at or near the benchmark…maybe a shade higher, but I don’t read a big nerf bat resulting.
Just my 2 cents fwiw.
Q
He doesn’t directly say ‘too high’ for single target damage, but I think the implication is there. My belief is that he wouldn’t bring up SV’s single target dps lightly or without cause (he’s very careful with his words).
I think we should remember Blizzard’s renewed commitment to pulling outlier dps specs toward the median. That, taken with GC’s suggestion that SV’s dps is markedly and consistently high, is I think a strong sign that SV will receive some tweaking.
Also, if you’re willing to assume that Frostheim and GC are seeing the same things in raid data, then you’re likely to conclude that GC’s comment reflects his awareness of a signicant deviation on SV’s part from most other dps specs. http://www.warcrafthuntersunion.com/2010/12/sv-conversations/
In not saying “nerf,” I think GC was merely being political, avoiding a firestorm of hunter qq and keeping his options open for just how he’ll deal with SV’s high single target damage.
I wouldn’t wholly disagree with you. But past performance being the great equalizer…GC doesn’t ever pull punches when it comes to where they are headed development wise. If he felt they needed to come down, he’d have said it. Not veiled…just said it outright. Backlash be damned.
At least that’s been his M.O. in the past.
I would say this, I don’t suspect a big nerf in general to the spec. I suspect a buff to the other specs for Hunters, and a single/slight adjustment to SV. That is a tweak to Explosive Shot….or a change in the Agility modifier for SV’s spec.
Something that affects just that class, but nothing major as to truly drop SVers to the bottom as has happened in the past.
I agree with Quori. Ghostcrawler never specifically mentioned that the high Survival numbers are a cause for concern. Perhaps they should be that high and that the MM and BM numbers are failing to keep up with SV. It of course will seem odd if MM/BM cannot stand on par with SV on single target DPS.
Survival dps is crazy, I found myself to have 11k dps on a dummy with full pre hc gear and gladiator. 359 bow, cat as pet, even reforged everything into haste…don’t want a nerf, but it’s kinda needed :)
If youre doing 11k dps on the dummy, in 346+ gear, youre doing something horrible wrong.
Comments like this are not helpful, Lucy.
im sorry.
I think survival hunters are just a TAD and when I say tad i mean a tad overpowered when it comes to single target. I think it just needs a little tweaking.
I think Blizzard should at least give Hunters the ability to melee within 5 yards and be able to shoot a target 0-5 yards. There are no other range classes that cannot cast a spell to inflict damage within that distance. Why single out hunters?
