The rating requirements for a lot of Arena pvp gear have been removed. You will still see red text on these items at the vendor if you do not have the required rating, but you will nonetheless be able to purchase them if you have enough Honor Points. This means that, yes, you can buy ilvl 264 ranged weapons with 2550 honor each (a gun, a bow, and a crossbow). If you’re actively raiding and using an ilvl 232 ranged weapon, or if you’re a dwarf who still resents having to kneel before Zod, now’s your chance. There are two sad notes, though: ilvl 277 weapons still have rating requirements and resilience cannot be reforged.

I’ve been rather seriously looking at the bow. I currently have normal Zod’s, and the bow has the same DPS, but higher Agility (51 vs 34) and more Crit (34 Crit rating vs 0) as well as higher minimum damage.
Zod’s has a proc, so I’m not really sure how the proc value hold up against basic stats.
I did pick up a shield very quickly for my Shaman though. That was a heck of a deal.
Any opinions from the experts on the bow question?
I think that a trustworthy answer to that question would require a working spreadsheet or a good chunk of time spent in front of a test dummy. Your thoughts are the same as my own, though. I like the better average weapon damage on the Wrathful bow, but Zod’s proc isn’t something that can be dismissed by eyeballing it.
Yeah, I always have a hard time assessing item differences where there’s a proc involved vs standard stats.
My suspicion is that both would be close enough so as to be within the margin of error but a working spreadsheet would certainly help.
Margins of error are determined by your sample size, and so if you do enough good testing on a target dummy you can achieve a reliable differentiation between the weapons. Of course, that requires caring enough about the difference to stand in front of a dummy for that long, though.
And I’m not sure I really have the time/patience to stand at a dummy for that long, and even if I did the chances of having it to myself for that long are pretty much nil right now. Which is why I’m looking for theorycrafting experts to weigh in!
Theorycrafting expertise is procedural knowledge more than it is substantive knowledge of specific pieces of gear. I doubt a panel of such experts would tell you anything other than what I’ve said: without reliable, valid dummy data drawn with your particular circumstances (spec, mastery, etc.) as constants, a confidence-inspiring measure of which weapon is better for you will not be had.
The ilvl 264 gun has 50 more dps than zods + agi, crit and stam. the bow and xbow have the same dps as zods.
Also the higher ones you cant buy all have 30 more dps than zod’s. which is kinda funny since the lower level gun has more dps than the higher lv version lol
No it doesn’t. The Wrathful gun and bow are identical in DPS and stats, I’m looking at them in-game right now.
294.7 dps (3.00 Speed)
51 Agility
77 Stamina
34 Crit
34 Resil
The Crossbow is different, having 102 AP instead of 77 Agility.
The DPS on them is the same as Zod’s (well Zod’s is 294.8) and Zod’s has a faster Speed (2.80). The Wrathful weapons have better stats and Zod’s has a proc.
Anansi’s right about the weapon dps.
When patch 4.0.1 hit, all guns did higher dps than bows and crossbows. This was however fixed and if you clear your cache you will see the correct values on your guns.
Cheers,
Gav
I checked with the weapon vendors in the sewers of Dalaran earlier today and although I had enough honor points, I was unable to purchase anything due to a restriction for a PvP rating.
Am I doing something wrong?
Make sure you’re trying to buy ilvl 264 weapons and ignore any text on them asking for a pvp rating. As of right now on live, all you need is honor to buy ilvl 264 pvp weapons.
Note that due to the removal of weapon speed normalization those of us that were still raiding with Rowan’s took a HUGE hit in DPS.
Thank you so, so much; I’m glad I caught this.
My Warrior alt also picked up a new shield and sword while I was at it and, let me tell you, I am not going to miss Lucky Old Sun and the Titansteel Shield Wall.
OMG, checked the new female dwarf spreadsheet, and it tells me that the Wrathful ilvl 264 bow is better than heroic Zod’s. Which seems so weird to me. I wonder if I’m just an aberration or if I didn’t put the right settings down in the spreadsheet, or if it’s just a bit bugged at the moment. Wonder if anyone’s getting any kind of weird output from it as well? =/
Both normal and heroic Zod’s appear to be low for their item level in the new spreadsheet build. My guess is that this is a bug. The proc does not show up under “Gear Bonuses” (as I believe it used to) and so it may have been left out entirely. That’s only speculation based on a possibly incorrect memory, though.
The difference between Wrathful and Zod’s is probably due to the fact that Wrathful is 3.0 speed and Zod’s is 2.8. Since currently shots are not normalized for weapon speed at equal tooltip dmg the slower weapon should be better.
GC recently told Frostheim that this was not intended and that they would be correcting this, but I don’t know when they will make the change.
I usually never PvP these days but with the conversion of badges into HP I was very close to having enough HP for a Wrathful weapon. It took me just one evening of painful PvP to get enough points. So went ahead and bought it and now Zod is in the bag.
Once teh change comes in I will probably be switching back to Zod’s.
I bought the gun and put Zod’s in the bank. I’m a dwarf so I’m thinking that the Dwarven racial will make the gun better…plus I just like the BANG sound.
While its great to be able to get PVP weapons for PVE please please dont miss a great opportunity to let rip in BGs and prove hunters rule.
As a long term BGer in MM spec post patch I’ve respeced to BM and can definitely see a step change in performance and fun. BM is totally OP, to the extent that I am worried it cant last and will be nerfed at some point. (Still they will hopefully fix some pet talent bugs sooner, dash/charge are going awol on resummon at the moment)
MM I was usually top or close to top of tables but still very reliant on finding good groups, especially a healer who would throw an occasional spell my way. BM still top or close to top and not only in DPS but healing as well.. So now able to storm nodes solo: 1-1 pretty certain take out most classes and even 1-2 can cause plenty of grief and stay alive til others arrive.
Pets have awesome abilities now, start BG with a hero from your core hound then switch to devilsaur as a killing machine or spirit wolf for great buff and your very own personal priestbeast. Rinse and reapeat every 4 minutes. Shed a tear if your pet dies but dont hesitate, startcast Revive, interupt and summon another… 1.5s Heart of the Phoenix for all pets for zero talent points.
Nice.. see a pally in pink and now you think easy meat.
Best of all.. if a rogue jumps you, just “say hello to my little pet” and watch him try to sprint for his life then hit Intimidation and let him suffer.,…
