This post focuses on the new things that hunters can expect to find in The Crimson Hall’s heroic modes. It assumes knowledge of the normal versions of the fights and takes as a given that the encounters put out more damage and have higher dps requirements. I’ve previously posted guides to the first and second wing heroic modes if you have questions about those fights.
Blood Prince Council
This necessarily messy fight is imposes a messiness tax in heroic mode: Shadow Prison is a stacking shadow damage debuff that increases with every movement you make. It clears if you simply hold stand still for its remaining duration. Stack levels beyond six or seven get to be too much of a strain on heals. The only person who can easily afford to take higher stacks is the Keleseth tank, who has enormous shadow damage reduction from the Dark Nuclei. Pets do not seem to care about the debuff at all.
Shadow Prison will kill anyone who moves too much, but it particularly discourages the normal mode practice of having hunters running all over the place chasing Kinetic Bombs. This reduction in mobility combined with the fact that bombs start lower and fall faster can make it necessary to share the bomb job with other players. If you are on bomb duty, taking a portion of the room rather than the whole thing can make the job doable (though remember that, unlike you, your pet can still easily get to bombs anywhere in the room). Once you get the fight down, you may need less help with bombs. I have an offspec with three points in Hawk Eye and found that, at least on the 10man version, my pet and I could handle the vast majority of the bombs in spite of Shadow Prison if I stood in the middle of the room. Yet, regardless of whether a hunter is the primary bomb dpser or is an equal part of a team, communication about bombs is all the more important on heroic mode. The combination of bomb landings being more destructive to the raid and the small chance of one player being able to get every bomb makes constant coordination among the ranged dps essential.
Keleseth’s empowered shadow lance hits really hard and so hunter ranged tanking is not as viable in heroic mode as it is in normal mode.
Blood-Queen Lana’thel
This fight is much like heroic loot ship: if you have mastered its normal mode mechanics, you have mastered its heroic mode mechanics. There is a bit of extra strain on heals but that does not change what we do as hunters.
If you have any additional tips about Crimson Hall heroic modes, please leave them in a comment below.
If you’re in a pinch, hunters can certainly tank shadow. Put on some pet-tank gear or PvP gear and just grab a bunch of the shadow orbs as soon as possible and make sure healers know you will need heals (for once!). It’s actually quite nice. You can occasionally killshot or in a pinch distracting shot. In the future, I’ll probably make them macros to so I don’t need to target him. (I was using a focus frame so I didn’t lose him.)
That said, I’d add that if you have a good group, dividing the room into three (one stage, two left and right audience) it makes Kinetic Bombs much easier. Those three will only have to move when there’s stuff on the floor. Your stage person can be a raid-aware healer with an instant damage spell.
It is important to note that in the heroic mode pets can no longer keep the kinetic bombs up by themselves. I remember being able to set and forget my pet on an orb until he returned to my side, but now you are better off with your pet switching to each active boss for damage towards a kill and just paying attention to your section of the room for orbs.
Is that on 25man? Pets don’t seem to have a problem on 10man heroic.
Yes I am referring to 25m heroic. Pets just don’t pull enough damage, or didn’t the first time I was there to trust them. Tat could have changed, but I basically gave up on trusting them for the bombs and float them between whichever boss is active at the time. Especially since I can’t reach taldaram when he’s tanked on the right side of the room and my duty is the left area :(
