Two of the rules for the list that I'll try to make more explicit in future versions are that the gear should not require setting foot in a raid or require huge amounts of money. Those rules are kind of unrealistic regarding what hunters actually do (they may get VoA or weekly raid drops while still gearing up for the latest content, for example). However, the rules are I think the appropriate places to limit the list as they leave only items that don't require delving extensively into different ways of playing the game (pvping, AHing, raiding).

Personally, though, I agree with you that farming rep for that ring is a good way to go (and a good way to learn how raid trash can be different from dungeon trash). The money put to the Kirin Tor ring might be better spent (thinking long-term) on some Rock-Steady Treads though, owing to the existence of the Ashen Verdict ring, the 245 emblem ring and agility rings dropping early in both toc and icc.

Terrific guide. I've looked at this list several times as I've been gearing up. I was surprised when I thought I had arrived and that there was ... one more drop to try and find!

I wonder two things: The Runed Band of Kirin Tor can be bought up at any time and seems to be an upgrade, might it have a place on your list?

The other is that I see people running ICC rep for the Ashen Verdict rings. I've not done it on my hunter but I have on my healer and it was pretty easy to get Friendly, maybe five runs? It seems that this might also be an option as a pre-raid strategy.

All else being said; a big thank you for this wonderful resource!

Now if I can ever get a new stat stick to drop. Right now I'm very sad that I haven't gotten one to drop. Still stuck with an iLevel 175...maybe tonight!

Great guide. I wish I have discovered it a few month ago...

Question: Will not be Darkmoon Card: Undeath a beter choice than Mark of Supremacy?

I have MoS, but is annoying that you must keep track of it. And because of his 2 min cooldown, I can use it on HCs only against bosses, macroed with Rapid Fire. While it saves me 3 talent points (I am Survival), it does provide only about 82 dps increase every 2 min.

Meantime, DMC: Undeath has an internal CD of 45 sec (as DMC:G) and provide:
--------------
Darkmoon Card: Death
Binds when picked up
Unique-Equipped
Trinket
Requires Level 80
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 85 (1.85% @ L80).
Equip: Each time you deal damage, you have a chance to do an additional 1750 to 2250 Shadow damage.
-------------

So, to compare, in that 2 min period, MoS gives you for 20 sec a 82 DPS increase which is about 1640 damage. While DMC:U (beside the permanent almost 2% crit increase) gives two and an half free shots of an average 2k shadow damage each. And I am not counting the expected crit of 50-60% I usually have. Also, I am not counting that those shots hit even if the target is out of range or if you are jumping or hoping or moving or being impaled by some nasty bosses.

So, what do you think? Does my math slack or it this Card better?

P.S. Starting raiding a week ago, I have replaced Needle-Encrusted Scorpion with Whispering Fanged Skull and this weekend I will replace MoS with Greatness card. But I have just discovered Undeath card and now I regret I didnt knew about it sooner. And I still have doubts if it is not better to replace Whispering Fanged Skull with it.

As the new dungeons have nothing for my hunter I need I've been running the new instances alot in PUGs to gear up my alt warrior tank, and can say that the packs of 5+ can be an absolutte bugger to tank so for the love of god please please use your misdirect. If youre planning on raiding you should have a MD macro, so why not get one now. A simple one to start with is:

/tar TANK
/cast misdirect
/targetlasttarget

Just swap TANK with the name of the tank at the begining of the instance it takes like 3 secs to set up and will really help you and your tank out. Just cast it before the pull then after the tank has started you can multi shot then volley

I think this is a great list, and represents a lot of hard work, so thanks for putting it together.

However, I want to strongly encourage folks to make use of the Hunter Spreadsheet website (femaledwarf.com) to make sure the top upgrades are the right upgrades for YOU. There are several cases here where I'm wearing #2 or 3, but #1 would be a DPS downgrade for me. Use this as a guildline, but check before you buy.

Great Update Euripides,

I was wondering if it might be useful to include Holiday Drops,

for example
Ring of Ghoulish Glee (from Headless Horseman) could deserve a spot in your Ring selection?

I know you want easily accessible items, but
Just in case people are reading this at those times and thinking of skipping Holiday achievements.

Loving the podcasts too.

Wow, I go into one RL meeting and the post comments section explodes! :)

I can unfortunately not do custom javascript on the blog in any form. Not even if I pay wordpress... the only way that would be able to happen is if I either migrated the blog to something like blogger.com, or paid for a server somewhere and installed the wordpress.org open source blogging platform, which allows complete control. Unfortunately, that means that every time wow.com links me, the site would go down (unless I had the kind of background horsepower to handle that kind of traffic, and that would cost even more).

This lack of custom javascript is the reason I can't have live tooltips to wowhead, but is also responsible for making the site basically hack proof. No nasty drive-by malware :)

Well, it is better, but this guide is based on gear that I think it would be reasonable to expect a hunter to obtain.
Nice guide! Just a couple suggestions:
Broken Links:
 The Nymph Heart Charm
 Broach of the Wailing Night

Also, would it be possible to create those cool WowHead popup links? IE, when you hover over a link, a small window pops up with summary information on the item.

Here's how to do it:
Include this line in the page source (head section):

Form your Links like this:
<a href="http://www.wowhead.com/?item=47579" rel="nofollow">Black Chitin Bracers</a>

Change the class to modify the text coloring. q4 is epic, q3 is rare, etc.
When hovering over the link, a thumbnail image of the item will pop up along with a small pane showing item stats.

Far faster for users vs navigating to a new page for each item.

You're definitely right about it being possible to gear up elsewhere, and the hunter community certainly makes great gear lists that are really helpful. I've just found it's easier to convince folks to run ToC or Violet Hold to gear people than it is to convince them to run some of the longer instances. And of course it's possible to do great DPS in ok gear; unfortunately, my experience was with folks who were a bit out of practice, and who were also in gear that was rather meh. As you pointed out, if you can kill the bosses with ok gear, awesome!

Sorry, don't mean to derail this post! I really found it very useful to see where I can find improvements.

I know the new instances got mobbed by just about everyone when they launched but three guidlies have this item. In addition I have grouped with 4-5 others that have it already so the drops rate can't be that bad. On the other hand I wonder if the rate was nerfed in the hotfix that came after the patch. The fix reduced the chance of the new instances to drop epic items on trash. The quest item is "junk" but its purple junk so I assume it was nerfed as well.

You're right, I suppose it merits mentioning in some way or another. I'd like to learn more about the drop rates on the hilt before saying whether hunters should plan their gear choices around getting it or just hope to get it by rare chance.

Thanks Quill. Yeah, I agree that the new instances require a bit more out of people. I've tried to keep this guide just about gear (and not dps), but it does merit saying that you should be doing 1.5k when you start old heroics, 2k for H ToC5 and 2.5k for the new heroics. That may sound snobbish, but it's not at all hard to do if you follow the excellent advice found in the online hunter communities. It's entirely possible to do 3k in pre-HToC5 gear.

Because of that, I'd also say that it's not so much gearing up in ToC5 first but being able to meet those dps benchmarks that matters for when you can start the 3.3 heroics. You can skip gearing up in HToC5 if your groupmates have enough skill to compensate for not having the ilvl 219 gear.

Don't forget to mention the final item reward from the quest item "Battered Hilt" that has a chance to drop in the heroic mode of the three new IC instances. The quest reward that hunters would most like is a ilvl 251 2H sword. Its also of note that the quest item is BoE so can be purchased. Going for 9-10K gold on my server as of this week.

The link for the Pauldrons of Concealed Loathing is not functioning.

Other than that, really helpful! My guild is too small to run raids as a guild, but a few of us are getting invited to the occasional raid with some friendly guilds, and I'd like to be geared enough that I get invited back!

Just a few thoughts on the new instance:
We ran the new normal last night with 3 well-geared (average ilvl over 200) 80s (myself, the tank, and the healer) and two 80s mainly wearing blues and a few purples (two guildies who are too busy with school to play much) and we managed to get through everything despite a few wipes and a fair number of deaths until the end bit of the Halls of Reflection with the Litch King; we just didn't have the DPS to take down all the mobs fast enough.

If you're considering running the normal with some guildies to gear them, or running it yourself with mid-level gear, head back to TOC first to build up your survivability. I'd say all 3 dps need to be doing at least 2k dps in a high movement multi-target fight before you'll be ok; I was getting up to about 3k and near 4k on other bosses but the end fight has very little down time so I ended up in viper for some shots and everything has to be taken down quickly, and since the other two were doing about 1.5k dps, we decided to call it a night.

My perception after running the normal a few times and the first two parts of the heroic twice is that the ICC 5man normal is designed to be beaten by people who were running HToC, and that the heroic is doable by folks who've got a mix of HToC and raid gear, because Blizz wants people to be able to take it down after gearing up in the normal.
