Edit: As of Dec. 7, 2010, this guide is thoroughly out of date.
How do you get gear that is fit for raiding if you are not already raiding? These days the answer is not simply “run heroics for drops.” The answer is a bit more complicated, and so I decided to write this guide.
If not just heroics, where else can you get gear before raiding? Blizzard wants to make it easy for you, so they provide a number of sources. You can earn raid emblems (used to purchase gear) by running heroics, you can run Argent Tournament dailies for seals (again used to purchase gear), you can obtain crafted or other “Bind on Equip” items, and you can still run heroics for drops.
Your goal in gearing up for raids is to have all your items at ilvl 200 at a minimum and most items at ilvl 219 or higher. Beyond that, strive for the highest ranked items on the table so long as you can keep your 8% hit chance. If you obtain any set of items from this list, you will be geared enough for Naxx. If you obtain a set of rank 1 items from this list, you will be geared enough for the latest raid content.
Note that I do not include the latest raid content’s BoE items, money dumps, or the latest crafted items. These are usually still too costly obtain for the pre-raid hunter to be worth the effort. The same goes for items purchased with the latest emblems. They are obtained too slowly from the daily heroic to be worth mentioning, though you may find you can get one or two pieces that way as you gear up. If you do, choose items that will serve you well and that you won’t likely replace right away once you start raiding.
I include items purchasable with outmoded emblems because you may have some old emblems sitting around. Keep in mind that it is probably not worth it to obtain items purchasable with conquest or lower emblems unless you have a bunch of those emblems already and want to put them to use.
Guide to the Table
- Slot: item slot.
- R: the rank of items list by slot, with 1 being the best rank
- some items for the same slot sometimes share the same rank
- if your item for a given slot is not rank 1 (or better), keep trying to get the rank 1 item
- Item: the name of the item, linked to Wowhead
- items with A and H options link to Alliance and Horde options, respectively
- Obtained: the source of the item
- drop: indicates that the item drops from a mob
- H means the heroic version of the dungeon
- N means the normal version
- AN = Azjol-Nerub
- CoS = Culling of Stratholme
- DTK = Drak’Tharon Keep
- FoS = Forge of Souls
- HoR = Halls of Reflection
- HoS = Halls of Stone
- Nex = Nexus
- OK = Ahn’Kahet: The Old Kingdom
- PoS = Pit of Saron
- ToC = Trial of the Champion
- UK = Utgarde Keep
- UP = Utgarde Pinnacle
- VH = Violet Hold
- Emblems: emblems are used to purchase this item
- BoE: this item is “Bind on Equip,” and so can be obtained from the Auction House (AH) or from its native instance (Ulduar, Naxx, etc.)
- crafted: the item is crafted, meaning you can either buy it made at the AH or get the mats and try to get someone with the pattern to make it (hopefully a guildy who knows the recipe)
- rep. reward: these items can only be purchased from the quartermaster of the named faction, and only after obtaining the noted level of reputation
- drop: indicates that the item drops from a mob
- Hit: identifies the amount of hit rating obtained from the item for easy reference

Notes on the Table:
- 1H Melee: Why don’t I have more on the table? Before ilvl 219, most 1Hs can’t compare to the 2Hs and so aren’t worth mentioning. As it is, a 2H is likely to be better than 2 1Hs of the same ilvl.
- AH items: Why are they included when they always cost so much money? Because if you have the money, they’re a better expenditure than vanity pets or mounts. And some (namely the Darkmoon card) are just worth having period.
- Trinkets: Why are all of those trinkets at rank 2 when they’re not the same at all? It is fair to say that their worth will vary based on your needs: if you need a lot of hit, Mark of Supremacy will be the best for you among them. If you’re going for an Armor Penetration build, you’ll probably want the Scorpion. They all have rank two because I think they are all better than the old heroic drops while being worse than the Darkmoon card. My position on this may change as more data from 3.3 becomes available.
- Quel’Delar, Ferocity of the Scorned: Why isn’t in on the table? You’d be right to wonder because it is probably the best pre-raid two-hander in the game right now for hunters. However, I treat it like the latest BoE items and Frost Emblem gear. You may get it before you start raiding, and if you do that’s fantastic. However, the Battered Hilt‘s drop rate and its AH cost make it markedly different from the rest of the gear on the table. At this point I do not want to say that it is something that hunters can rely on getting with a reasonable amount of effort. As more information comes in I may change position on this. It is also true that demand for the hilt will likely go down for multiple reasons while we continue with 3.3. That means that as time passes it may become reasonable to include the sword in this table.
Comments on the Table:
- The best places to get good gear drops are the 3.3 heroic instances (HoR, PoS, FoS). However, the gear is better in these places for a reason: they are more challenging (allegedly), and so you should be out of greens before attempting them. Because of that, you may have to pursue lower-ranked items before you can go after the higher ones.
- You’ll note that the table now includes the tier 9 Windrunner’s set (ilvl 232) which can be purchased with Triumph Emblems at the Argent Tournament grounds. On a one-for-one comparison you’ll probably find that the non-set ilvl 245 pieces are better when available (I didn’t test every single pair of gear, but it’s a reasonable assumption). However, the two-piece tier 9 set bonus is pretty great and is worth trying for. As such, it works out well that we have two slots that do not have pre-raid ilvl 245 gear: gloves and legs. I recommend using these slots to obtain the tier 9 two piece set bonus and gearing up with 245 pieces in the other slots. Edit: As of 4.0.1, the tier 9 two piece bonus is no longer as good and so getting two pieces of tier-9 is not the priority for freshly 80 hunters that it once was.
- Obtaining the best pre-raid gear will require running a lot of heroics for Triumph emblems. I recommend using the random heroic lfg tool as it will net you two extra Triumphs per instance completion. To do that, you’ll have to get through an initial random heroic for the day that will net you Frost emblems instead; so, if you grind heroics for weeks, you may have enough Frost emblems to get a piece of current raid gear before you ever start raiding. Choose your purchases wisely. Upgrading a cloak, for example, may be smarter than going with an item slot that is (1) more readily upgraded once you start raiding or (2) that has a 245 pre-raid option given above.
- Eidotrope
The sphere of red dragon blood has 50 hit (not 5). Otherwise this is an excellent reference!
I fixed it for him. Thanks!
The link for the Pauldrons of Concealed Loathing is not functioning.
Other than that, really helpful! My guild is too small to run raids as a guild, but a few of us are getting invited to the occasional raid with some friendly guilds, and I’d like to be geared enough that I get invited back!
Just a few thoughts on the new instance:
We ran the new normal last night with 3 well-geared (average ilvl over 200) 80s (myself, the tank, and the healer) and two 80s mainly wearing blues and a few purples (two guildies who are too busy with school to play much) and we managed to get through everything despite a few wipes and a fair number of deaths until the end bit of the Halls of Reflection with the Litch King; we just didn’t have the DPS to take down all the mobs fast enough.
If you’re considering running the normal with some guildies to gear them, or running it yourself with mid-level gear, head back to TOC first to build up your survivability. I’d say all 3 dps need to be doing at least 2k dps in a high movement multi-target fight before you’ll be ok; I was getting up to about 3k and near 4k on other bosses but the end fight has very little down time so I ended up in viper for some shots and everything has to be taken down quickly, and since the other two were doing about 1.5k dps, we decided to call it a night.
My perception after running the normal a few times and the first two parts of the heroic twice is that the ICC 5man normal is designed to be beaten by people who were running HToC, and that the heroic is doable by folks who’ve got a mix of HToC and raid gear, because Blizz wants people to be able to take it down after gearing up in the normal.
Thanks, fixed the broken link.
Thanks Quill. Yeah, I agree that the new instances require a bit more out of people. I’ve tried to keep this guide just about gear (and not dps), but it does merit saying that you should be doing 1.5k when you start old heroics, 2k for H ToC5 and 2.5k for the new heroics. That may sound snobbish, but it’s not at all hard to do if you follow the excellent advice found in the online hunter communities. It’s entirely possible to do 3k in pre-HToC5 gear.
Because of that, I’d also say that it’s not so much gearing up in ToC5 first but being able to meet those dps benchmarks that matters for when you can start the 3.3 heroics. You can skip gearing up in HToC5 if your groupmates have enough skill to compensate for not having the ilvl 219 gear.
You’re definitely right about it being possible to gear up elsewhere, and the hunter community certainly makes great gear lists that are really helpful. I’ve just found it’s easier to convince folks to run ToC or Violet Hold to gear people than it is to convince them to run some of the longer instances. And of course it’s possible to do great DPS in ok gear; unfortunately, my experience was with folks who were a bit out of practice, and who were also in gear that was rather meh. As you pointed out, if you can kill the bosses with ok gear, awesome!
Sorry, don’t mean to derail this post! I really found it very useful to see where I can find improvements.
Eidotrope, you are at the top of my hunter blog list and you continue to provider great information very quickly. Thanks so much for your hard work.
You’re very welcome!
Don’t forget to mention the final item reward from the quest item “Battered Hilt” that has a chance to drop in the heroic mode of the three new IC instances. The quest reward that hunters would most like is a ilvl 251 2H sword. Its also of note that the quest item is BoE so can be purchased. Going for 9-10K gold on my server as of this week.
You’re right, I suppose it merits mentioning in some way or another. I’d like to learn more about the drop rates on the hilt before saying whether hunters should plan their gear choices around getting it or just hope to get it by rare chance.
I know the new instances got mobbed by just about everyone when they launched but three guidlies have this item. In addition I have grouped with 4-5 others that have it already so the drops rate can’t be that bad. On the other hand I wonder if the rate was nerfed in the hotfix that came after the patch. The fix reduced the chance of the new instances to drop epic items on trash. The quest item is “junk” but its purple junk so I assume it was nerfed as well.
This is the best most up to date gear guide ever. Thank you. I didn’t know about the new/old items you can purchase with badges.
[...] Pre-Raid Hunter Gear Guide – Updated For 3.3 [...]
Shouldn’t HoF be HoR?
Good catch- updated.
Nice guide! Just a couple suggestions:
Broken Links:
The Nymph Heart Charm
Broach of the Wailing Night
Also, would it be possible to create those cool WowHead popup links? IE, when you hover over a link, a small window pops up with summary information on the item.
Here’s how to do it:
Include this line in the page source (head section):
Form your Links like this:
Black Chitin Bracers
Change the class to modify the text coloring. q4 is epic, q3 is rare, etc.
When hovering over the link, a thumbnail image of the item will pop up along with a small pane showing item stats.
Far faster for users vs navigating to a new page for each item.
Thanks for the catch with the links. They’re working properly again.
I’ve been told that wowhead tooltips don’t work on WordPress blogs, but I’ll confirm that just to make sure. I’d love it if they did work, I think it would really improve the guide.
Wow, I go into one RL meeting and the post comments section explodes! :)
I can unfortunately not do custom javascript on the blog in any form. Not even if I pay wordpress… the only way that would be able to happen is if I either migrated the blog to something like blogger.com, or paid for a server somewhere and installed the wordpress.org open source blogging platform, which allows complete control. Unfortunately, that means that every time wow.com links me, the site would go down (unless I had the kind of background horsepower to handle that kind of traffic, and that would cost even more).
This lack of custom javascript is the reason I can’t have live tooltips to wowhead, but is also responsible for making the site basically hack proof. No nasty drive-by malware :)
Oh well. Thanks for checking!
Now I gotta get my hunter another 13 levels so I can use the guide!
Regards
Hmmm… the javascript line didn’t show up. Here it is with angle brackets replaced by square brackets. Just swap them back with the appropriate angle brackets.
included in head:
[script src="http://static.wowhead.com/widgets/power.js"][/script]
Each link:
[a href="http://www.wowhead.com/?item=45560" target="_new"]Spiked Deathdealers[/a]
Regards!
Hi, I just wanted to ask wouldn’t Quel’Delar Ferocity of the Scorn be better than Orca Hunter’s Harpoon, got both and I’m using the sword, is that a mistake?
Well, it is better, but this guide is based on gear that I think it would be reasonable to expect a hunter to obtain. Battered Hilt costs and drop rates are not good enough (as far as I know) that I want to tell hunters they should rely on getting this weapon.
Thanks for the quick reply. Well, I admit, I got lucky and got the drop on the first day, before they reduced the rates. Thanks for the response and for the awesome guide!!
Unless they happen to have enough spare cash laying around that they could afford a mammoth but chose not to buy it yet :P
Great Update Euripides,
I was wondering if it might be useful to include Holiday Drops,
for example
Ring of Ghoulish Glee (from Headless Horseman) could deserve a spot in your Ring selection?
I know you want easily accessible items, but
Just in case people are reading this at those times and thinking of skipping Holiday achievements.
Loving the podcasts too.
I didn’t include those rings and other things because you can’t obtain them reliably year round. If I included all such items I think it’d lead to a clutter and confusion in a list that is already pretty long. You’re right, though, that some of those pieces can be good pre-raid gear.
Note that this is Eidotrope’s work, not mine :)
Great resource! I will put this to good use while gearing my hunter. On a side note, the Dexterous Brightstone Ring is bought for 35 Emblems of Triumph, not 45.
Gah, thanks for catching that. It’s fixed now.
I love this guide. It’s already helped me more than I can say with knowing where I stand as far as gear goes. Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I think this is a great list, and represents a lot of hard work, so thanks for putting it together.
However, I want to strongly encourage folks to make use of the Hunter Spreadsheet website (femaledwarf.com) to make sure the top upgrades are the right upgrades for YOU. There are several cases here where I’m wearing #2 or 3, but #1 would be a DPS downgrade for me. Use this as a guildline, but check before you buy.
Oh, definitely. Rankings of available gear and evaluations of optimal personal dps are two different things. The table only provides a loose ordering of individual gear pieces by slot, with no consideration of gear combinations, spec, pet, etc. Those things will vary by hunter, and have to be accounted for by individual hunters.
yes…I’ll add my two cents worth to fully agree. I have a helm from an Ony run sitting in the bank. It has nice stats but if I equip it and lose a set bonus I’ll drop DPS. Use the spreadsheet !
As the new dungeons have nothing for my hunter I need I’ve been running the new instances alot in PUGs to gear up my alt warrior tank, and can say that the packs of 5+ can be an absolutte bugger to tank so for the love of god please please use your misdirect. If youre planning on raiding you should have a MD macro, so why not get one now. A simple one to start with is:
/tar TANK
/cast misdirect
/targetlasttarget
Just swap TANK with the name of the tank at the begining of the instance it takes like 3 secs to set up and will really help you and your tank out. Just cast it before the pull then after the tank has started you can multi shot then volley
[...] OutDPS has put together a simple yet comprehensive gear list that also lists the amount of hit the gear gives you. With it, I’ve used to identify upgrades [...]
Thank you for this guide. I am one of two hunters in my guild and no one could tell me where I could go to find new boots. I have been in all triump and it is good to know I can finally look forward to getting Epic! Thank you. Also does anyone know if there is a guild like this for Mages? I am looking to hook my wife up with some better gear and all my guild says is it is all crafted.
Great guide. I wish I have discovered it a few month ago…
Question: Will not be Darkmoon Card: Undeath a beter choice than Mark of Supremacy?
I have MoS, but is annoying that you must keep track of it. And because of his 2 min cooldown, I can use it on HCs only against bosses, macroed with Rapid Fire. While it saves me 3 talent points (I am Survival), it does provide only about 82 dps increase every 2 min.
Meantime, DMC: Undeath has an internal CD of 45 sec (as DMC:G) and provide:
————–
Darkmoon Card: Death
Binds when picked up
Unique-Equipped
Trinket
Requires Level 80
Equip: Improves critical strike rating by 85 (1.85% @ L80).
Equip: Each time you deal damage, you have a chance to do an additional 1750 to 2250 Shadow damage.
————-
So, to compare, in that 2 min period, MoS gives you for 20 sec a 82 DPS increase which is about 1640 damage. While DMC:U (beside the permanent almost 2% crit increase) gives two and an half free shots of an average 2k shadow damage each. And I am not counting the expected crit of 50-60% I usually have. Also, I am not counting that those shots hit even if the target is out of range or if you are jumping or hoping or moving or being impaled by some nasty bosses.
So, what do you think? Does my math slack or it this Card better?
P.S. Starting raiding a week ago, I have replaced Needle-Encrusted Scorpion with Whispering Fanged Skull and this weekend I will replace MoS with Greatness card. But I have just discovered Undeath card and now I regret I didnt knew about it sooner. And I still have doubts if it is not better to replace Whispering Fanged Skull with it.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve referenced this page for gearing up my new main. So a big thank you for putting this up!
Now if I can ever get a new stat stick to drop. Right now I’m very sad that I haven’t gotten one to drop. Still stuck with an iLevel 175…maybe tonight!
from what i can see if u got this gear u way over hit capped and whit arena s8 out u can get a very nice wrist from honnor (hand in ur stone keeper shards too get it)u’ll lose 7 agi but gain alot off crit and ap..
just a thought
Thanks for the tip. As for hit rating, the guide provides a listing of hit precisely so that people can budget it effectively.
Terrific guide. I’ve looked at this list several times as I’ve been gearing up. I was surprised when I thought I had arrived and that there was … one more drop to try and find!
I wonder two things: The Runed Band of Kirin Tor can be bought up at any time and seems to be an upgrade, might it have a place on your list?
The other is that I see people running ICC rep for the Ashen Verdict rings. I’ve not done it on my hunter but I have on my healer and it was pretty easy to get Friendly, maybe five runs? It seems that this might also be an option as a pre-raid strategy.
All else being said; a big thank you for this wonderful resource!
Two of the rules for the list that I’ll try to make more explicit in future versions are that the gear should not require setting foot in a raid or require huge amounts of money. Those rules are kind of unrealistic regarding what hunters actually do (they may get VoA or weekly raid drops while still gearing up for the latest content, for example). However, the rules are I think the appropriate places to limit the list as they leave only items that don’t require delving extensively into different ways of playing the game (pvping, AHing, raiding).
Personally, though, I agree with you that farming rep for that ring is a good way to go (and a good way to learn how raid trash can be different from dungeon trash). The money put to the Kirin Tor ring might be better spent (thinking long-term) on some Rock-Steady Treads though, owing to the existence of the Ashen Verdict ring, the 245 emblem ring and agility rings dropping early in both toc and icc.
