List of Arena Advice for the Ages
October 30, 2009Hey guys, I’m gonna throw up a list of great tips that anyone can use in arenas to increase their rating, even experienced players. I’ve been doing arenas actively since s1 and I still screw these up, so don’t feel bad if you don’t do these!
- The first thing you should do every time the gate opens is make a focus target. Even if you have to change your focus mid-game, at least make one at the start to get in the habit and remind you during the game to pay attention to more than just your main target.
- Learn to be patient. Sometimes you will come up against a team that you can’t see how to beat right away. Just play as you would normally and wait for them to slip up. Once someone on their team does something dumb, like trinketing a snare or popping Avenging Wrath, you can capitalize on it. Likewise, avoid making stupid decisions just because you think you can’t win. The other team is waiting for you to do something stupid too :)
- Call out all your cc. By this I mean you should tell your teammates before you use one of your cc abilities, so that you don’t overlap CC and waste diminishing returns. You should also call out for a dispel when you are cced. People seem to think it’s shameful to get cced and they keep quiet on vent. True skill is knowing you’re about to get cced and giving your teammates a head’s up so they can dispel you. Note that I didn’t say “call out when you are cced,” I said “call out for a dispel when you’re cced.” Your healer will probably be busy healing while you’re being cced, and if all you say over vent is “sheeped…” he might not be able to make the logical connection that he needs to dispel you right away. Top-notch players will be able to understand what you really mean, but if you have someone that good on your team then you probably don’t need my advice :). So make sure to call out for a dispel specifically.
- Skype > Ventrilo
- Get in the habit of asking your teammates when their major abilities are up like repentance and death grip. If your teammates are just using abilities like this whenever they see fit, it will be hard to take advantage of them, and you will lose to teams that can coordinate better than you. Make it clear to your teammates you aren’t just subtly reminding them to use that ability, that you really want to know if it’s up so that you can organize some cc and get a kill somewhere.
And that’s it! Anyone who can regularly implement these 5 steps in arenas will see a big jump in ratings, guaranteed. But it takes time, so learn to be patient, and don’t try to make excuses.

Why is Skype better?
there’s no delay and you don’t need to use a pushtotalk key. not using a pushtotalk key eliminates the time it takes a vent user to cue his mic, which may not be much but is definitely there, and it prevents the mishaps that occur from someone thinking they cued their mic when they didn’t, or letting go of the key too early. Of course you could just not use pushtotalk while using vent, but I find that it doesn’t work nearly as well with vent as it does with skype
Why do you set your focus right away, why do you use your focus ability for? Do you have special focus macros, and if so what do you use. Just trying to figure out what the benifits of that would be over just click targting useing gladius or someting in that manner?
He had a post about how to use focus and focus macros- take a look :)
Thank you Euripides, much appreciated.
Hi!
You have a good start but I would like to see more specific advices.
There are several more things we should discuss for certain foes:
Pet management (ie spiders web for instance)
How to kill a Warr/drood/rogue/mage/etc
Macroing in viper sting/silencing shots for focus targets
and much more
Take a look at the right hand column- scroll to the pvp section, and read the guides he’s written. He’s covered everything on your list.
Been searching for hunter tips like mental, but hardly found any decent materials or any comprehensive tuts for PvP. Pretty much wanna say thx a million and I wonder if I can contact you with a few questions of my own.
Sent you an email.
