Onyxia Tip!
October 5, 2009In phase three of both 10 and 25 man Onyxia (read all about it here), you will find yourself being regularly feared. The floor will also be exploding. My advice had been simply to “try not to stand on the cracks of the floor”, however there is a nifty little space I found that you can stand on and avoid any floor damage, as well as any possibility of being feared into a whelp cave.
During this phase, you can jump up onto a ledge (approximately where the red arrow is pointing) which will put you above the level of the exploding floor. When you get feared, you’ll run along the red oval, never having to worry about running toward the whelps while you can’t control your movement :)

Yeah I was really happy to see that you can still use this spot when they revamped the fight. Makes P3 so easy.
So was I. My guild has changed quite a bit since last time though, so instead of the 5-7 hunters that knew about it back then standing on the ledge, there was only me!
Good to know. Still one of the easiest encounters for a hunter that I’ve seen to date.
I do like this fight. It’s still a bit hard for some PuGs to deal with though.
Thank you for the tip. If you can’t make it to that side of Onyxia, the other side of the back wall is also better than being out in the open. You get feared and then (usually) just run into the wall instead of into fire or a whelp cave. I have yet to see a 25 Ony pug that survives long enough for that advice to matter, though.
Honestly, make the time to run to the wall in phase 3. The slight dip in dps while you run (still using all your instants even if you don’t stagger run to let auto fire) is well made up by only running 3 ft under fear before being able to return to full dps.
There is a point in the red oval that has a concave section that stops you going further along the wall … its usefulness depends on where the raid gets Ony placed for the final tanking.
Where is she being tanked at when people are on the ledge?
The north wall, normally. It’s about as far from the whelp caves as you can get.
Be careful about getting aggro though. If they haven’t fixed it since the original, she evades if anyone on the ledges gets aggro and heals up quickly, adding unnecessary length to the encounter.
Are you not in the cleave area while in this oval?
I’m fairly certain that the cleave can not reach this ground due to the same pathing issues that prevent you from being feared off of it. At least, I’ve never been cleaved up there. Someone will probably correct me if this isn’t true though :)
I may, or may not, have turned Ony in a PUG where I saw a bunch of folks using this spot.
Mmmm-BBQ
Nice tip thanks! Also don’t forget to hug your shaman’s tremor totem. Oh? You forgot to invite a shaman? :P
Also known as “Hunter Hill”.
AS IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE ONLY WE DESERVE TO BE ON THE GODDAMNED THING.

I have been reading that people are having problems PuGing 10 man. Well I have lead it back to back now RL the pugs and both times now have been 1 shotted. Groups would at least consist of 2 Tanks, 3 Healers, 2 Melee DPS and 3 Ranged DPS. I am sure you could even do it with 1 Melee and 4 Ranged if you want. During phase 2 I have all ranged on Onyxia at all times and I have Melee taking down the guard in the back and welps when there is no guard. I hope this helps.
