EU First Kill of Yogg Hard Mode with a BM Hunter?
July 10, 2009Wow.com broke this story, but the reason I’m posting is the screenshot. Is that a beast master hunter pet I see there? Indeed, it’s a devilsaur! What does this top 10, now EU first achievement bearing guild know that I don’t?
Edit: yep, Shaylee was BM during this fight.

most dont know how to spec or play BM Im finding in fights where you need burst damage BM kicks ass. Im MM this week as our MM hunter was away so no 10% AP but most of the time Im BM as BM I Pull 7kDPS on XT this week as MM I pulled 6.9kDPS on th same fight with the same group. the rest of the raid sucked this week yeah as we lost out AOE heals but see the DPS for your self.
XT as BM with all AP gems.

XT as MM with all AGI gems

A single data point does not erase a long history of analysis and testing that indicates that, currently, BM is about a fifth less DPS than the other two specs. Still, this only measures sustained DPS on a normal boss (which XT is not), and since BM can time their cooldowns, that may put them ahead on certain fights.
MM/Surv may be better overall for sustained DPS, but there’s definitely something to be said for timed burst. Auriaya, for example – the burst DPS to get all the adds down before her first fear is the worst part of the fight; the rest is easy (I can’t comment with any authority on Yogg because I haven’t done the fight myself).
Also, some say stacking affliction locks makes Yogg easier because they don’t lose DPS when turning around to keep Sanity – well, BM hunters are the same because pets are an effective “DoT” that keeps DPSing through madness.
Maybe they didn’t have a ret pally and wanted Ferocious Inspiration?
The devilsaur can’t go insane, so he don’t have to turn away from Yogg.
They start off pretty crazy. But yeah, that’s probably right.
Bingo. Yogg-Saron without Freya is sort of a gimmick* fight which heavily favors classes which can afford to take a DPS break. You have to spend a lot of the time turned away from Yogg, and that hurts some classes more than others. Stars (World First Yogg-0) absolutely swore by Aff-Warlocks for this fight, because obviously the DoTs would keep ticking when they were faced away. The hunter’s pet still fighting through the Gaze thing is the same deal.
* – By gimmick, I mean that the encounter mechanics favor one class or role much more than others.
I’m still lost as to why she has 3 points in focused aim, won’t that hurt pet dps and thus a larger proportion of a BM hunters dps. It sounds to me like the spec is purely situational but I still would like to see a log of the fight.
not any more- it now passes to the pet like all other hit
If they used the tactic that Stars posted then it might be because the hunter himself will need to focus on Distracting Shotting adds and turning around from gaze, but the pet can keep up the dps while the hunter is focusing on other stuff.
