As as survival hunter, you can expect your pet to be a very minor contribution to your damage. In fact, if a pet dies in a boss fight, it typically takes him 5-10 times as long as the revive pet spell cast time to simply replace the damage you would have done had you not stopped to bring the little guy back. Still, 10%-20% of your damage comes from it, so if you respecced from beast mastery, count your blessings. The one skill you bring over to survival that many survival hunters never bothered learning is keeping a pet alive.

patch 3.1 edit: while some of this is still good, patch 3.1 changed the game a little for survival. Here’s the guide, and here’s the shot rotation. OK, I’ve rambled on about how to play a survival hunter, but unless you have a good spec, you’re still going to suck, even if you take all [...]

We interrupt our regular scheduled hunter programming to bring you a video of an undead something-or-other using a heretofore unknown item to destroy a beautiful little toy train set.

As I’ve stated before, survival hunters can currently pump out more boss DPS per unit of gear than anyone else. It’s almost unfair. Almost.

To become an extraordinary DPSer, you need to make choices in spec, gear, play-style, and pets. Making the wrong choices is easy. Just do whatever seems best and don’t bother looking up your assumptions. Making good choices requires (ideally) a solid understanding of general PvE concepts, as well as a specific kind of knowledge that one could [...]

Hunters won’t need dual specs when it comes out. We only have one spec, and that’s the “Awesome” tree. Put all your points into it, and you’ll top the dps charts.

This is a blog about being a level 80 raiding hunter. Raiding hunters do one thing extremely well: we turn gear into dps. We do it arguably better than any other class. And we will /roll on just about anything.
